Is this an extra day for playing catch-up with our Star, or is this to be a day for setting into motion the quantum leap of consciousness that is needed for a viable planetary future?
While we’ve been asleep, corporations and politicians, big banks and Wall Street, have been busy beneath the radar screen. And the mainline media is so obsessed with celebrity scandal (this week is focused on who wore what at the Academy Awards), that for any news we may need to be responsive and responsible American citizens, we must take our Secretary of State’s advice and tune into Al-Jazeera World News. Stewart and Colbert on The Comedy Channel also tell the truth, if only to make light of it, and make it easier to swallow.
But we’re waking up now, and we’re not laughing. There is so much gone wrong, so much to right, so much to do that we’re scattered, frustrated, and often acting out among ourselves. Yet chaos means opportunity. And #F29 is the day to protest the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
Our gathered group is pathetically small in this city of two million, but here we are, come out into the delicious winter sun. Members of Occupy Las Vegas, the Sierra Club, and the Moapa Paiutes, we are children, youth, students, middle agers, elders, retirees, the unemployed, underemployed, the homeless, home owners, snowbirds, seasoned and first time demonstrators all making this statement: we’ve connected the dots between our local energy monopoly whose coal fired power plant has been poisoning and polluting with impunity for half a century, and the ALEC rewriting of regulations that block EPA action on behalf of people and the planet, keep fossil energy profitable, and the climate warming up because of it.
Such is the irony of this day: an over abundance of current sunlight closes the day as a benediction pronounced upon us as we disperse…..for now. But we’ve barely begun, for Leap Year 2012 is The Year of Occupy.
